Once Single Use Support's RoSS® shells, the secondary packaging containers for single-use bags, have fulfilled their duty and protected valuable, life-saving biopharmaceuticals on their way from the manufacturer’s site to where they have been expected, the question is: What now? While the substance they had previously contained continues its journey in bioproduction or fill/finish sites, the packaging containers have seemingly reached their final stop. But have they really?
Not quite. Certain single-use components, such as the bag, cannot be reused and therefore need to be disposed. However, the RoSS® shell's journey is not quite over. Instead of focusing on safe transport of biologics, the priority now shifts to reducing environmental impact. The good news: RoSS® shells can be recycled easily and responsibly. How to recycle RoSS® shells?
RoSS® shells, the protective storage and shipping containers for single-use bags manufactured by Single Use Support, are composed of 3 main materials:
-
Stainless-steel lids
-
PE panels
- 3D foam

It is easy to separate RoSS® shells into their base materials, and each component can be recycled with minimal effort.
Using the example of a RoSS® shell 1041 (designed for a 10 L bag), approximately 95 % of the shell consists of fully recyclable materials. Both the stainless steel and polyethylene (PE) panels are 100 % recyclable, supporting efficient material recovery and sustainability efforts. The remaining 5 % of the shell is composed of viscoelastic polyurethane foam, which currently has limited recyclability and can only be processed in specialized facilities and in large quantities.
The journey of the RoSS® shell doesn’t end once its contents have been removed. In fact, by properly recycling these bioprocess containers after use, their environmental impact can be significantly reduced. This is a key aspect of
enforcing sustainability in the biopharma industry and reflects our commitment to developing innovative, responsible fluid management solutions.
