Case Study - Advantages of a Robust Cold Chain Transport Solution for Biopharmaceuticals

Biopharmaceutical manufacturing requires shipments of thousands of liters per day, be it for bulk media or buffer solutions, be it small volumes for advanced therapies or frozen APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients) that are sent in single-use bags to fill & finish for final formulation and dispensation into vials and syringes.

In the past, single-use bags were simply put into trays for transportation once they were frozen. Lack of protection has made the single-use bag prone to leakage as it becomes glass-like and very fragile when frozen to sub-zero temperatures. The process was simple, but packaging compliance was not maintained. The lack of protection resulted in temperature inconsistencies and product loss caused by bag breakages.

A multinational biopharmaceutical company producing monoclonal antibodies is shipping frozen API in 240L batches across borders. Aside from the importance of maintaining the cold chain during the 5-day shipment overseas from Europe, the transportation of the drug product should be as safe and cost-effective as possible.
