Case Study - Universal Ultra Cold Storage of Biopharmaceuticals

A global biopharmaceutical company – one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world – operates several manufacturing sites, including some in German-speaking countries.
One of them manufactures products ranging from biologics for oncology and chronic inflammatory diseases to gene therapy applications.

Single-use bags, bottles, vials and syringes are used as primary packaging for therapy transfer. Due to the large volume of primary packaging at each production line, there are a number of different devices required for the same process step. This is also the case for cold storage of active ingredients with a temperature requirement of ≤ -65 °C, leading to incompatibilities with storage freezers and inconsistencies in storage temperatures.

With the implementation of new cold storage freezers with a modular interior design, the pharma company pursued the goal to:
1. Increase storage density for long-term storage of bottles with constant temperature conformity of < 3°C during cold storage.
2. Standardize the cold storage for all products to be stored at ≤ -65 °C, regardless of the primary packaging used.
